Basics of Metal Spinning
Metal spinning is a precision metalworking process that reshapes material rather than removing it. A flat metal disc or tube is formed over a mandrel using high-performance spinning lathes, resulting in seamless, rotationally symmetric components. Depending on material properties and design requirements, the process can be performed under cold or hot forming conditions.
During metal spinning, the metal blank is securely clamped onto a CNC spinning lathe and rotated at high speed. Forming tools—typically rollers—apply localized pressure, progressively forcing the material to conform to the mandrel’s geometry. This incremental forming method enables exceptional dimensional accuracy, repeatability, and surface finish, even for complex shapes and tight tolerances.
One of the key advantages of metal spinning is its flexibility. The process accommodates both thin- and thick-gauge materials with relatively low tooling and setup costs, making it suitable for prototyping, small-batch production, and large-scale manufacturing alike.
